Tesla recalls, for Good.

Another interest of mine, as many of you know, are electric vehicles. I have many times touted the virtues of Zero Motorcycles http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/ and of course Tesla Motors http://www.teslamotors.com/ As I mentioned in a previous post it has been interesting to see Tesla developing it’s distribution network through local malls, the Garden State Plaza in New Jersey and the Westchester Mall in White Plains NY. The showrooms are small and elegant with room for one each of the two models in the Tesla stable.

When I heard today about the recall of 20% (which really only amounts to about 260 cars) of the S models manufactured between May 10th and June 8th my first response was to call Bob. But having known Bob for many years I did not want to put him on the spot, as he is a lead Robotics Engineer and not really involved with the car manufacturing per se.

So I looked to other sources and found out that Tesla is being responsibly proactive in getting out in front of this by replacing the mounting brackets in the recalled units. The bracket is weaker than they would like and so they are erring on the side of caution.

The following comes from the Wall Street Journal website http://on.wsj.com/17YVszV

Now unfortunately given the spare distribution network and that they are selling through the malls I immediately wondered. Where in Nicola’s name does one get these things serviced? So I got on the phone with Lawrence Smith jr of Econolec Electric Company http://www.econolecelectric.com/ but of course he had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. So looking around I found out that the service centers are not very conveniently located at least not for this area of the Northeast. If you buy your Tesla S from the dealer in Paramus the nearest technician is in Long Island City Queens. Which realistically is only 23 miles away, you just have to cross one small island, they call it Manhattan :-)

Anyway, I hope this was informative and if I can get a comment out of Bob I will be sure to pass it along.
